Hakeem out.

Halftone print of Hakeem Jeffries’s official House portrait, smiling.

Democrats won the House. Jeffries hasn’t earned the gavel.

He’s already written to House Democrats to “humbly request” their support for Speaker, and so far nobody’s running against him. They pick their nominee behind closed doors, reportedly in mid-December. If nobody makes a fuss, he walks right in. So make a fuss.

“I have not refused to endorse. I have refused to articulate my position.”
Hakeem Jeffries in October 2025, four months after Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primary for mayor of Jeffries’s own city. Roll Call

That’s who’s asking for the gavel.

When it counted, he wasn’t with us.

to endorse his own party’s nominee.

Mamdani won in June 2025. The top Democrat in the House got around to backing him on Oct. 24, the day before early voting started. Roll Call

  2. 103

House Democrats voted to cut $3.3 billion in U.S. assistance to Israel.

More Democrats voted yes than no. His whip, Katherine Clark, voted yes. So did Nancy Pelosi. Jeffries wrote to his caucus to oppose it, calling the amendment “overly broad.” He ended up behind his own members. NBC News

The new class isn’t sold.

“What’s your plan to actually get Medicare done? … That’s what the voters want to see. And if that’s not a priority of yours, then I don’t think you should be speaker.”

“Since taking over as leader, Hakeem Jeffries has betrayed working-class voters and really steered the caucus to the right.”
Robert Dempsey, Our Revolution · The Lever

As of late September, at least six progressives who won their House primaries hadn’t committed to backing him for Speaker. Political Wire

“It wasn’t simply a blue wave. It was an American tsunami.”
Jeffries, Nov. 4 · Al Jazeera

Great. Then he can survive a contested election.

Nobody’s apologizing for winning. We’re asking why the prize for winning is the same leadership with no questions asked. If he’s so sure of himself, let him face a challenger and answer for his record.

Two votes. Two chances to stop this.

  1. The Caucus

    Reportedly mid-December

House Democrats pick their Speaker nominee in private. Members-elect count. This is the one to win.

  2. The floor

When the new Congress opens in January

The whole House elects the Speaker, out loud, by name, in public. Nobody gets to hide on this one.

What we send. When you press Find my representative, your street, city, state and ZIP — never your name or your letter — go to our lookup service on Cloudflare, which asks the U.S. Census Bureau which district the address is in — possibly twice, for the current and the new district maps around January’s change of Congress. We don’t store or log it, but Cloudflare and the Census Bureau may keep standard request records. Prefer not to? Use the official House finder (house.gov, opens in a new tab).
